The Glock 19 is a very good gun right out of the box. It is simple, relatively accurate, reliable and reasonably priced. In addition, some improvements can be made. The triggers aren't fantastic, the sights are pretty basic, and the barrels aren't "match-grade" and can have issues with lead bullets.
Many readers along with this author are able to make the necessary changes in their own time. I competed in the IDPA with a Glock 20. With changes to the ghost rocket trigger linkage, XS scope and Lone wolf barrel, the gun became much easier to compete with. That said, some people don't have the time, patience, or technical knowledge to make many modifications to their Glocks. Machining chips and barrels is also something that many people simply cannot do at home. This is where customs offices like ZEV come into play.
ZEV Technologies is known for making radical Glocks, with slides, barrels and triggers in just about every color imaginable. The Oxnard, CA-based company offers every possible Glock conversion, including complete trigger replacement kits and slides that are cut to accept small red dots (MRDS). More and more shooters are buying into this trend because it can really speed up accurate pistol shooting just by placing the dot on the target. MRDS on a concealed carry pistol like the G19 improves capability, not hinders concealability. I personally have an FN45 with this capability and it is very quick to ring steel plates or switch to multiple targets.

You can get a ZEV Glock one of three ways: Find a ZEV dealer with pre-made pistols (by far the fastest option), send your Glock to ZEV with a list of work that needs to be done, or buy a Glock of and specify the work to be done. The ZEV G19 looked and felt great. The bronze Dragonfly slide contrasted nicely with the dimpled black DLC barrel, and the grip mods looked professional. The most noticeable change was how high I could raise the web of my shooting hand on the grip due to ZEV's beaver tail modification. The CCW dot and double undercut trigger ensured that the gun sat securely in my grip without chafing. The jagged textures of the thumb were also a good reference point for a repeatable grip. All in all, this is an impressive pistol and a radical departure in appearance from the standard Glock.

However, two problems immediately arose with this gun. The first time it came to my FFL from ZEV, the trigger pins didn't fit the frame properly. Someone at ZEV customer service suggested that my FFL fix the problem on their end. This proposal was rejected, and the rifle was sent back to ZEV for refinement. Another issue was that I noticed after removing the RMR plate that there was a significant burr on top of one of the bolt mounting posts that I had to sand off before mounting the RMR itself. This was disappointing, as custom work in that price range must be carefully checked before going to customers. (I've seen much worse in my gunsmith/retail experience though).
The trigger broke at 4 lbs 4 oz, and had a short pull and reset. Although a huge improvement over the stock trigger, the break was not as clean as the triggers I have equipped with Ghost triggers in the past.
It would all be a waste of time, money and effort if the gun didn't shoot well, so I tried it at the range. In all, I put 250 rounds of 9mm through the gun, consisting of Black Hills reworked 115gr FMJ, Independence 115gr FMJ, and Federal 124gr +P+ Hydra-Shok JHP. I initially had 6 problems with failure to feed, with rounds hanging from the roof of the chamber. I'm not sure if it was a break-in of the new slide and barrel, but I didn't experience any further problems of this type after the first 50 rounds.
Further into the test, I experienced misfires with all 3 brands of ammo. I examined the primers and found them to be the result of light strikes. Total failures of this type were 5 out of 250. An overall "failure rate" of 4.4% isn't ideal, but it's not terrible either. Another problem I ran into was the screw at the end of the ZEV's rod/spring assembly moving during ignition. It was fixed with proper fixing and some loctite but it should have been fixed on their end.

The tanks are easy to insert and remove, both filled and empty. The power release was much more tangible and positive than the standard G19. There was also no problem with the modified Glock when set up from the holster.
Accuracy testing produced some... interesting results. The RMR and sights provided an absolute eyewitness as advertised. In the beginning the groups were not as close as they should have been with all 3 types of ammo; 3.5 inches at 15 meters. I am no stranger to shooting the Glock for accuracy and was wondering what the problem was. I checked the sights and RMR and they were good. On a hunch I swapped out the ZEV "match grade" barrel for the factory Glock barrel. At the same time, the groups gathered. It was not fun for me.
From then on, groups tightened to about 2 inches at 15 yards with all types of ammo. Without a microscope I can't say for sure what the problem is with the ZEV tube. It certainly didn't deliver the improvement I've seen with KKM or Lone Wolf barrels in the past.
Switching to steel, the ZEV G19 was quick to engage targets and easily moved around a range of targets, thanks to its slide-mounted RMR. Having a slide was an advantage as far as how well the sight was placed. It certainly won't be pushy or intrusive when worn concealed. If the point fails, the eyewitness scenes will be the perfect support.

The ZEV Technologies G19 was aesthetically pleasing to both the eye and the hand. Their finishes and patterns look and feel great. The sights provided absolute co-witness with RMR's point as advertised.
The trigger is nice, but quite expensive compared to the aftermarket work on the trigger with a quality connecting rod, even with the hour investment to make the gun. The problems with the trigger pins, bolt post and guide should have been fixed at ZEV before the rifle even left the shop. There is no excuse for such things at this price.
As for the barrel, I did not have a cast lead bullet on hand to test the barrel. Main reason
